I so enjoyed your seminar. I learned more than I thought I would in a very short period of time. It is a credit to your team that you can speak to room full of people at different skill levels and all of us are able to understand and take away something siginficant to use. I look forward to using all the aspects of social media to which you introduced us and look forward to working with you in my new capacity as Director of Tourism for Bath County.

~ Kathy Bopp

The service from VBIC well exceeded my expectations! Nice job ~

~ Frank Hackney

I spent most of the day on eVa, doing more research to get acquainted with the system. I am all registered and have done the application frorm for SWAM. Thank you SO much for the help and encouragement with getting going. I don't think I would have gotten past the first page if you hadn't given me the tour and showed me the ropes. Your printed instructions with screen shot were a lifesaver.

~ Joyce Johnson Rouse, Earth Mama®/Rouse House Music

This past year, in the midst of taking on a partner in my craft store and expanding operations, we participated in the Entrepreneur Express Workshops scheduled back in February. I am here to tell you, the workshops are a wealth of information on such subjects as personnel hiring, accounting, advertising strategies, financial resources, business plans and so much more! While the workshops are presented by professionals, they also talk to YOU .. “one-on-one.”

I gained a great deal from attending these workshops and would highly recommend them to anyone who is thinking about starting a business, has recently started a business or is planning an expansion. If I had the time I would take one again to gain even more knowledge.

One-on-One Counseling Testimonial

I wanted to write and thank you [VDBA Staffer Dave Fuller] for the time you spent with me yesterday morning. This meeting was very beneficial to me in the same way a meeting with your doctor where he says Chris you have Cholesterol of 260 you need to make changes. A wake up call.

Thank you again for your time and input I figure our meeting yesterday saved me thousands of dollars and many mistakes down the road.

Sincerely,
Chris Birchall

Testimonial from Olivia Denton-Barrett, a participant in the SWVA one-on-one counseling program:

Thanks so much for your time and valuable insight. My family and I have discussed all the items you went over with me, and we plan to pursue the avenues you mentioned. I think what you are doing is an important, and needed, service to small business.

Tidewater Entrepreneur Express Testimonal:

Let me start off by saying that I have an idea for a consumer product that I would like to develop and hopefully sell to the general public. I have the technical knowledge to develop this product but I do not have any experience in the "starting and running a business" side of business life. Being a busy professional, I had debated on whether or not it would be worth my time to attend one of the many Entrepreneur Express workshops hosted by the Virginia Department of Business Assistance. I could not be more pleased with my decision to attend. (All it cost me was my time, since the workshops are offered at no charge. Nice !) I found that the information provided was very relevant and directly applicable to the many phases of "business startup". I was equally impressed by the level of experience and professionalism that all of the guest speakers possessed. At the workshop, I gained knowledge about the many different aspects of business development, including : business plan writing, marketing tips and ideas, financing options and many other parts of business formation that I otherwise would not have been exposed to. I felt that the education which I received at the workshop was so good that I have attended two more workshops since that first one. I can honestly say that I have walked away with something new from each of the workshops that I have attended ... not only knowledge but also the contacts that were made available to me at each of the events.

Thank-you, Kathy [Kathy Dolan, VDBA Express Workshop Leader], and to all the members of the Entrepreneur Express workshop team for all your hard work putting these events together.

Respectfully Yours,

Michael Fenn

Text of an email sent to VDBA:

I am writing today specifically to thank your deparment for its efforts in assisting business creation and development opportunities.

Earlier this year I was pleased to be able to attend the Entrepreneurs Express workshop at my Alma Mater, Radford University. The program is excellent not only for the caliber of the individuals and information provided, but specifically because of the follow up and contuined access to tools and counseling by the department. Id like to specifically mention the comfort and acceleration that has been provided by my contact with Sandy Ratliff.

Representing an emerging product to meet emerging demands requires an ability to successfully navigate to decision points and procurement departments for success. Sandy has not only been able to grasp that need for knowledge and protocol, but very effectively considered the type of knowledge needed at each step of the process.

She has effectively directed me to an understanding of the three key departments within state procurement: Natural Resources, Mines, Minerals and Energy, and General Services This direction has made me more comfortable with approach into procurement and offered key insight into the need for presence in Richmond to assist the already growing Renew Virginia programs efforts towards energy efficiency.

With Gratitude,
Corey Waltz

John Cason of Dark Hollow Coffee said this about the Entrepreneur Express workshops in Southwest Virginia:

I highly recommend this workshop. These guys are pros and provide a real assist to area entrepreneurs. From marketing to website development, this seminar touches on all that’s important to anyone interested in starting or surviving in business in SW Virginia. This is good government at work!

The Virginia Jobs Investment Program (VJIP):

VJIP completed its annual customer survey in December, 2008. See the overall rating here. Sample comments:

We have worked with our project managers a TON! They have been very helpful and flexible to provide us with quality training as well as working with us through the Jobs Investment Program. Keep up the good work!

I have been associated in the HR Function for over 30 years and have never seen a more user-friendly approach when it comes to programs like this. Truly focused on the goal (Jobs) and ease of use for the Customer. Thank you.

The Virginia Jobs Investment Program has enabled our company to expand our internal training program which is critical in the attraction of new employees as well as a valuable retention tool in maintaining our workforce. The program is a key ingredient to our overall strategy of providing our staff the ability to increase their skill sets in the IT business space which is so vital to the Northern Virginia economy.

TheVirginia Small Business Financing Authority (VSBFA):

“As an active lender and a willing resource to small businesses in the Hampton Roads region, Monarch Bank understands and appreciates the benefits to be derived from the growth of small businesses. Increased job creation and the growth of the regional economic base are vital to the community in which we work and live. That’s why Monarch Bank and the Virginia Small Business Financing Authority have partnered on a number of small business loans. Participation by the VSBFA reduced our risk and made making these loans possible. As a result, Monarch Bank has some good, new customers, Hampton Roads has some new businesses, and Virginia has more people employed. The partnership between Monarch Bank and the VSBFA is one that we hope continues well into the future.”

William Rountree F. Rountree, Jr., President & CEO, Monarch Bank

"The Virginia Small Business Financing Authority is a valuable ally in helping companies grow and prosper and expand our economy in the State of Virginia. The Bank of Southside Virginia has partnered with VSBFA to provide much needed capital to dozens of small businesses that otherwise would not have been able to obtain financing. We view the Capital Access Program as an important tool that streamlines the long process that usually comes with government sponsored programs. This allows much more timely financing and a lower administrative burden on the Bank and customer."

J Peter Clements, President & CEO

"The Virginia Small Business Financing Authority loans continue to be a very important component in our efforts to attract and expand local firms… Pulaski County encourages strengthening of the programs which provide specific assistance to local firms by the Commonwealth. The Virginia Small Business Financing Authority has done an excellent job of filling this role as exemplified by the level of support provided to Pulaski County firms …"

Sincerely,
Peter M. Huber,
County Administrator

"Without the assistance of VSBFA, Dickenson County would have been unable to purchase our hospital out of bankruptcy. Without that assistance, 16,395 citizens of Dickenson County would have been without access to healthcare... [The VSBFA provides assistance] in order for others to have the opportunity to have access to capital for worthy projects that will enable communities to grow and prosper."

Charlotte Mullins, Director, Industrial Development Authority of Dickenson County

“I wanted to express my thanks to the VSBFA for playing an important role in the startup and expansion of Service Center Metals. In 2005, our second year of operation, SCM will generate over $40,000,000 in revenue with over 60 employees. Expansion plans which are underway will more than double our revenue and workforce by 2007. Financing support in the form of a $ 1 million loan for start-up and a $ 2 million loan for our expansion were critical to SCM’s ability to get the business off the ground and to grow. Quite simply, without the VSBFA economic development financing, SCM might not exist.”

Scott Kelley, President and CEO, Service Center Metals, Inc
